Announcement by the European Court of Justice raises serious issues around fixed price of tobacco in Ireland
Date: 23 October 2009
Press Statement from ASH Ireland
ASH Ireland is aware of the European Court of Justice announcement yesterday (October 22nd 2009), which has raised serious issues around the fixed price applied to tobacco by the Irish Government.
Dr. Angie Brown, Chairperson of ASH Ireland said “The consequences of this development are potentially very worrying, especially for those in the health sector. It is imperative that the Irish Government finds a mechanism to ensure that cheap tobacco products do not now become available on the Irish market. Irish children in particular must be protected from the scourge of nicotine addiction and the well established harmful affects of smoking and the availability of cheap tobacco on the Irish market would make this more difficult”.
