Large quantity of illegally imported cigarettes seized by Customs Officers today welcomed by ASH Ireland

ASH Ireland welcomes Louth Seizure

ASH Ireland welcomes the work of Customs Officers in seizing a large quantity of illegally imported cigarettes in Co. Louth today.

Dr Angie Brown, Chairperson of ASH Ireland, said this evening, “The seizure by Customs is most welcome. It also again highlights the very serious tobacco smuggling epidemic, which we are now experiencing in this country - and it is imperative that the government takes further steps to address the issue.”

Close to 25% of cigarettes smoked in this country are non-duty paid in this jurisdiction and this is costing the exchequer over €500m annually in lost revenue.

The government recently increased the maximum fine for smuggling tobacco in the Finance Bill from €12,695 to €126,960, however much more needs to be done either by way of amendments to Finance Bill or with further changes to our legislation.

Customs and Excise needs further additional services to tackle this tobacco smuggling epidemic or the problem will expand rapidly. Additional personnel, technology, canine support and legislative changes are needed urgently to tackle the large scale smugglers and the commuters to other jurisdictions who are taking large amounts of cheaper cigarettes into this jurisdiction all year round.
