Press Statement from ASH Ireland
Date: 10 May 2005
ASH Ireland has noted a call from the Vintners Federation of Ireland for some ‘flexibility’ in regard to the ‘smoking legislation.’ We sincerely hope that the Government will not tamper with this important health legislation, which has such massive support nationwide.
Professor Luke Clancy said today, “This legislation was introduced to protect workers health – and this of course includes employees in the hospitality industry. If we want to have a smoking related carcinogen free environment – then it is imperative that we stick with this legislation in its entirety”
ASH Ireland also notes reports of job losses in the hospitality sector; however, we are not aware of any evidence to show that job losses in this sector are related to the smoking legislation nor are we clear how these figures were computed. We have also noted a media report suggesting that 200 licensed premises have closed because of the smoking ban. Perhaps the VFI will consider giving some further breakdown on this figure. If these figures were accurate it would be a unique outcome not seen in any other jurisdiction.
Ireland is now well established as an international role model in relation to protection of workers health. For a nation, which was once presented is a less favourable light in regard our lack of progression, we must value and preserve this new and positive role.
